ALI SWEARINGEN
Alison Kendall Swearingen draws from her training as a marine biologist and science illustrator to reflect upon technical mastery and resilience of the natural world. Enamored by the instrumentation and adventurings of 18th century naturalists and explorers, her work examines the intersection of modernity and ecology, incorporating traditional modes of scientific presentation with a dreamy surrealism and nostalgia. Adaptation and resistance are central themes in her work, which explores the place of nature in the face of industrialization and technological advancement.

Alison's paintings and illustrations have appeared in Scientific American, Make and Craft magazines, Harvard University Press, college textbooks, Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary installations and Bay Area galleries.
